The goal of this class is to introduce and embed the foundational concepts of high school chemistry at all levels. With an emphasis on mathematical chemistry and laboratory skills, the elements of this week-long, intensive class include the following essential topics: levels of precision and accuracy, significant digits, dimensional analysis, atomic structure and properties, periodicity, Coulomb’s Law, the mole and molar conversions, naming and formula writing of compounds, reaction types, balancing reactions, stoichiometry and thermochemistry. The concepts emphasized in this class were developed in consideration of the most current High School Chemistry Standards, as established by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (D.E.S.E.). This course is taught and was developed exclusively by a fully licensed science teacher of nearly 15 years, currently teaching at Lexington High School.
